Captain William Harry Thompson

It was a sunny late summer morning on Tuesday Sept. 11, 2001, a routine one for most of New York City when Capt. William Harry Thompson, a 27-year veteran with the New York State Office of Court Administration, reported for work. He was the Captain and firearms instructor as he taught at the court officers academy in lower Manhattan. He was a friendly man, easily engaging with observable leadership characteristics.

Thompson, 51, did not hesitate to rush toward the danger as everyone stood in the street in pure shock. His only thought at the time was to help along with the small army of firefighters and police officers who had arrived on scene.

Thompson helped with the rescue, but in his efforts to save lives, the South Tower, where he had run into, collapsed at 9:59 a.m. About 30 minutes later, the North Tower did the same, leaving a cloud of smoke and debris that could be seen for miles around. The event has since been cemented as an immutable gateway through history.

The Captain Harry Thompson Foundation provides tuition support to student athletes and resources to athletic departments, youth organizations and community centers. In addition, The Captain Harry Thompson Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that also supports community events and charitable causes.

Obituary

Being in the civil service field, Harry knew that he might be put in harm’s way for the good of others. This possibility he willingly accepted. When he went into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, it might have been with trepidation for his own well being, but it did not slow his step or soften his resolve to keep going. Because he knew the danger, because he moved in spite of it, and because he chose to save others, disregarding his own safety, he will always be remembered as our HERO.
